On September 2, 2000, in a friendly match between France and England, Deschamps completed his final match of 103 games for the national team. During his 11 years with the French national team, Deschamps, as captain, helped the French team win the 1998 World Cup and the 2000 European Championship.

In July 2012, Deschamps took over the French national team, leading them in 184 matches with a record of 120 wins, 35 draws, and 29 losses. He also led the team to one World Cup title, one UEFA Nations League title, one World Cup runner-up finish, and one European Championship runner-up finish.

Didier Deschamps had previously confirmed that he would step down as head coach of the French national team after the 2026 World Cup. Following the 0-2 defeat to Spain in the World Cup semi-final, Deschamps' final match is confirmed to be the third-place game, against England.
