Some Everton fans criticized Pickford, believing he could have saved Enzo Fernandez's equalizer for Argentina, while England national team member Glen Johnson had previously voiced his support for Pickford.
In an interview with the Echo, Glen Johnson said he believed England were going too far back and not putting any pressure on the ball carrier.
“No, that was a brilliant shot, (Enzo) Fernandez played very well,” Johnson said when asked if he thought Pickford should bear some responsibility for the goal conceded.
"If you drop back too deep, you invite pressure from the opponent. England had several warning signs before conceding, with Pickford making a header save and Argentina hitting the post."
"That was a brilliant shot, and he wasn't under any pressure when he took it. England needs to push their formation higher, and the players should be further forward. That way, Fernandez might not have had a chance to shoot at all, or his shot might have been blocked."
“But he has so much time to choose his angle. Fernandez is a top player, and when you give a top player that kind of space, they can put the ball in the net.”
