Recently, Belgian legend Eden Hazard gave an interview, defending goalkeeper Lamenz's mistakes at the World Cup and discussing the Belgian team's performance in the World Cup.
In the World Cup quarter-final between Belgium and Spain, Merino scored the winning goal in the final moments – after Lamenz parried a shot from 25 yards out by Kubasi, the ball fell right in front of Merino.
The reason this Manchester United number one goalkeeper came on as a substitute was because Belgian legend Thibaut Courtois was forced to leave the field due to injury.
Lamens faced considerable criticism after Belgium's World Cup exit, but Hazard told Stake , "Lamens is a great goalkeeper, he's proven that at the club level, and I believe he'll soon prove himself for the national team as well. People shouldn't be too harsh on him. He had to come on as a substitute in the World Cup quarter-final, replacing Courtois...the best goalkeeper in the world. That's a huge pressure for anyone, but I believe he'll bounce back and become even stronger."
Speaking about Belgium's overall performance in this World Cup, Hazard added: "I often see people not really having high hopes for us, but I think we've proven that we shouldn't underestimate Belgium. They've given us many wonderful moments. I feel very proud to see fans all over the country supporting the team."
