Former French national team captain Hugo Lloris, as a spectator, witnessed France's 0-2 defeat to Spain. At a press conference held by FC Los Angeles on Wednesday, Lloris spoke about the 2026 World Cup semi-final.
"As a French fan, witnessing this defeat is obviously heartbreaking," the former French goalkeeper admitted. "I think the French team carries too many expectations, and the course of this game was clearly not what everyone expected."
However, Lloris also praised Spain's outstanding performance, believing they displayed overwhelming dominance in Tuesday's semi-final. "I think Spain completely overwhelmed France," Lloris said. "They deserve all the praise and rightfully earned a place in the final."
Following the 2022 Qatar World Cup, Lloris announced his retirement from the national team. In the final of that World Cup, France and Argentina drew 3-3 in regular time and extra time, with France ultimately losing 2-4 on penalties. Currently, Lloris remains the French national team's all-time leading signer with 145 appearances.
