New York City Mayor Zoheran Mandani watched the World Cup semi-final match in which Argentina defeated England 2-1 with prisoners.
After the game, the mayor also posted on social media, writing:
A fantastic match. A match played by the people.
Throughout this World Cup, we have been constantly reminded of a simple truth: football belongs to everyone. So does the joy and sense of community it creates.
Yesterday, I watched the England vs. Argentina match with my fellow New Yorkers on Rikers Island. We shared one of the most exciting moments of the tournament side-by-side.
Joy and connection should not be scarce resources. Every New Yorker deserves recognition for their dignity.
