Argentine defender Molina appeared to strike Spanish midfielder Rodri in the abdomen as he ran onto the pitch to celebrate.

Then, a larger commotion erupted in the center of the field. Argentine midfielder Paredes appeared to grab Spanish player Eric Garcia by the throat before slamming him to the ground.

On Monday local time, FIFA stated in a statement: "Following an assessment of the match report related to the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, and in accordance with Article 36 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has appointed a disciplinary and ethics inspector to investigate any possible breaches of the FIFA Disciplinary Code in the post-match events."
