Scholes: Tuchel has definitely lost the support of many players in the locker room.

Scholes and Butt said that Kobe Maynu and several other players would be "very angry" with Tuchel after England's World Cup campaign ended.

After England's victory over France, Tuchel stated that Menu would be unavailable due to a back injury.

"He might be able to find excuses to get away with it, but I don't think Kobe Mayu would do that because he's focused on playing," said former England and Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes on the podcast "Football Good and Bad," which he co-hosted with Nicky Butt, when discussing Mayu's absence. "I think a few players will be angry with the manager. You know, this is actually quite common. Even in a 22-man squad, there will always be players who go to the World Cup but don't get a chance to play. But there's always a way to do things. Sometimes, if the team is performing well, you can barely understand it, but at that time, the England team desperately needed a player who could hold the ball and control the tempo of the game, but Mayu didn't get a single chance."

According to Scholes, Tuchel's treatment of Menu might be understandable if England performs well in this tournament. He added, "If the team plays well, Menu might be able to accept it and think, 'Okay, I understand,' but the team has played so poorly—frankly, they've had a bad performance throughout the tournament—it feels like Tuchel just doesn't want to use Menu. Anyone can play, but he's the only one excluded."

Ahead of Saturday's third-place match, Scholes' former teammate Nicky Butt encouraged Menu to simply refuse to play in the "meaningless" game, given Tuchel's perceived unfair treatment. Although England ultimately defeated France, Butt firmly believes that Menu is not the only dissatisfied player.

"Let me tell you, he (Tuchel) has definitely lost the support of many players in the dressing room," Butt said in response to Scholes' comments. "From the perspective of the players in the dressing room, if I were treated like that, and I was a good player in the team, I would think, 'I don't want to play for him anymore... I love England, I want to seize every opportunity to play for England, playing for England is the proudest thing in my life, but I don't want to play for him.' I guarantee that several players would think that way."

Scholes believes there is a problem of "selfishness" within the England team.

“Comparing our players to the Spanish team, I think our players are individually more capable,” Scholes, who represented England twice in the World Cup, continued. “It may sound absurd, but I do believe that our players are individually more capable than the Spanish team. But our biggest problem, and not just in this World Cup—it was the same when we were playing—is that the team simply doesn’t function as a cohesive unit. Everyone is too focused on their own performance. We have many talented players, but they are all too selfish.”

While Scholes still admires Tuchel, he believes the German coach's comments after the semi-final exit have put him in a more difficult position. "I've said before that I admire this manager," he continued, "but I think his post-match comments were worse than the team's actual performance. He said things like 'This isn't in the English football DNA.' Tuchel, you're part of the England team now, you have to fit into that DNA. He adopted a defensive stance and frequently criticized the players, which is something our manager (Sir Alex Ferguson) would never do. Ferguson would certainly criticize us privately, in training, and in meetings, but he would never do it publicly. But I think Tuchel has always had this problem at the clubs he's managed—always criticizing the players and clashing with the sporting director. Listening to his tone, you even wonder if he wants to be sacked? Sometimes, coaches use this method to force the team to fire them."

Despite calls for Tuchel's dismissal following the humiliating defeat to Argentina, reports indicate that the English Football Association (FA) still plans to maintain its trust in him. In February, Tuchel signed a two-year contract extension with the Three Lions, extending his stay until Euro 2028.
