Following Argentina's loss to Spain on Sunday night, Paredes' sister Barbara made controversial remarks about the Falkland Islands.
Throughout this World Cup, the dispute over this British overseas territory remained a major topic of discussion for the Argentine team. The players sang anti-British songs throughout the tournament and displayed a banner echoing Argentina's claims after their semi-final victory over England.
However, upon arriving in Buenos Aires after the team's defeat, Barbara Paredes further declared that the Falkland Islands belong to Argentina, which comforted her.
Barbara told reporters, "We are all very happy, but to be honest, we didn't expect to go this far. Now that we've come this far and beaten England, it means a lot to us."
“We may not have a third or fourth star, but the Falkland Islands are entirely ours.”
These islands have been British territory since 1833. Argentina has repeatedly attempted to claim sovereignty over them, including a failed invasion in 1982 that ultimately triggered the 10-week Falklands War.
