According to Euronews, the dislike for the Argentine national team has clearly resonated around the world, with 23 million people from 170 countries and regions signing a petition titled "Argentina out" demanding the permanent removal of Argentina from the World Cup.
The now-closed petition accused FIFA and referees of "clearly favoring Messi and the Argentine team" and raised the question: "If the champion is already decided, why do other teams in the world participate in this tournament? Expel Argentina from the World Cup and give everyone else a fair chance."
The petition garnered a precise 23,316,108 signatures, far exceeding the initial target of 5 million. It even came close to breaking the record for the most signed petition in history, held by "Jubilee 2000," which collected over 24 million signatures in 1997 demanding the cancellation of unpayable debts owed by impoverished nations by the end of 2000. This record was later confirmed by the authoritative Guinness World Records.
However, the petition demanding Argentina's disqualification from the World Cup ultimately went unanswered. Now, the only consolation for the signatories is Argentina's defeat in the World Cup final. The petition website concludes: "FIFA ignored us, but Spain kept its promise. Thank you, Spain."
