According to British media outlet talkSPORT, Manchester United will sign another top midfielder this summer and has already identified a target from their deep roster.
Manchester United have prioritized strengthening their midfield this summer, having already signed Tielemans from Premier League rivals Aston Villa and Andre Santos from Chelsea. French star Quadio Koné is also among the midfield targets on United's transfer target list.
With the team set to return to the Champions League next season, Carrick is looking to strengthen the squad through signings. Manchester United may set their sights on two French midfielders who participated in this summer's World Cup.
According to talkSPORT's chief transfer reporter Alex Crook, Manchester United are interested in Real Madrid star Zac Chaamere and Roma's Marco Kone. Real Madrid are hoping to sign Manchester City's World Cup-winning captain Rodri, and new manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly willing to sell Chaamere to raise transfer funds.
talkSPORT has learned that Rodri is pushing for a move to the Bernabéu, with only one year remaining on his contract with Manchester City. While Manchester United's signing of Choameli would help Real Madrid complete the deal, he is not the only Frenchman on the Red Devils' midfield transfer list.
talkSPORT previously reported that Manchester United had made inquiries about Kone. Kone, who performed brilliantly as the midfield maestro for France at the World Cup, is expected to leave Roma this summer. Previous reports linked Manchester United with Cuamené and his Real Madrid teammate Camavinga, and Krok revealed on Friday morning's program that Kone is also one of the club's targets.
Krok said: "Kone is also a target. They have a strong squad. I'm confident they'll sign another midfielder before the summer transfer window closes. Right now, they're just being patient and waiting for transfer fees to drop, because there's still a long time before the new Premier League season starts. Manchester United don't want to repeat the mistakes of previous years and end up paying too much in transfer fees. I think their signings of Andre Santos and Tielemans for a total of €85 million are a good start."
Following Casemiro's departure to Inter Miami, Manchester United have focused on strengthening their midfield this summer. Ugarte was initially expected to be sold, but a serious knee injury he suffered while playing for Uruguay at the World Cup will sideline him for an extended period, meaning the Red Devils will need to rebuild their midfield regardless.
Both signing Kone and Choameni will bring a wealth of experience, as both have proven themselves at the highest level. Kone made five appearances at this summer's World Cup, starting four times, helping France reach the semi-finals. He joined Roma last summer and had an outstanding debut season, making 29 appearances in Serie A and helping the team qualify for the Champions League.
Choameni started for France in the 2022 World Cup final, where they lost to Argentina. He won the 2024 Champions League with Real Madrid.
While praising Manchester United's sensible moves so far, Krok also acknowledged that the team still needs to strengthen certain areas. He continued, "They definitely need a midfielder. Maybe a left-back. Newcastle full-back Lewis Hall is their target because Luke Shaw can't play the full 90 minutes every game, especially with the Champions League commitments. I think they might also need a striker; ideally, they'll let Zirkzee go and sign a more prolific goalscorer."
