After participating in the 2026 World Cup, Argentine striker Nicolás González received a warm welcome from approximately 5,000 locals in his hometown of Belém de Escobar. He rode in a fire truck through the streets and participated in a tribute event with veterans of the Falklands War.
Nicolas González said, “Well, actually we didn’t do anything. We’ve always been trying to show the world our strength. I’m very, very happy to be treated like this. To be honest, the real heroes are the people behind the scenes (Falklands War veterans). It really touches me, really touches me. We should thank them, not us.”
Reporter: Nico, how would you rate the performance of this World Cup and the Argentine team, and the welcome you received upon your return home? Also, what do you have to say about the conspiracy theories and nonsense circulating about the events that occurred?
Nicolas González: Yes, to be honest, everything we've been through has been incredible. Everyone braving the rain to greet us was completely unnecessary because we didn't achieve our expected goals. As for the things circulating on social media, there's no need to believe them.
