Argentine Sebastián Becaceche has stepped down as Ecuador's head coach after the World Cup. He reappeared after Ecuador's loss to Mexico, offering a notable defense of the team's performance and the wave of criticism they faced even during the World Cup.
Beccaczeczecze stated: "Ecuador dominated the group stage and was much stronger than their opponents. We were the team that hit the woodwork the most times."
Notably, the Argentine coach didn't focus on possession or effective shots, but instead emphasized the number of shots that hit the post. Beccacheche mentioned opponents including Ivory Coast (three shots hit the woodwork), Curaçao (another shot hit), and Germany.
The Argentine also stated that claims circulating on social media about the Ecuadorian team being threatened were untrue. He said, "Absolutely not, I vehemently deny all of these claims. They are completely false. We lost because our opponents (Mexico) were better; they outperformed us because they scored goals."
"As a coach, I feel I haven't lived up to expectations throughout the coaching process. I should take the blame. I should shield the young players and kids from criticism because they need to maintain their form; the criticism should be directed at me... Seeing their tears broke my heart."
