According to The Athletic , a Democratic lawmaker has written to Gianni Infantino, demanding that he appear publicly at a hearing regarding his relationship with Trump and that he keep records of gifts and communications with the US president.

Will the relationship between Gianni Infantino and Donald Trump be formally investigated in the United States? The two maintained a very close relationship around the time of the 2026 World Cup, with the FIFA president and the US president even sparking controversy with several unexpected decisions: awarding Trump the Nobel Peace Prize and lifting the ban on Florin Balogun. A week after the World Cup final, according to The Athletic, a Democratic congressman has sent a letter to the head of world football.

Jamie Raskin, the most important opposition member of the House Judiciary Committee, requested in a letter that Gianni Infantino appear before the committee for a formal hearing, the contents of which would be recorded. However, this letter is not legally binding; the FIFA president can refuse to respond or refuse to appear before a member of the House.

In his letter to Gianni Infantino, Jamie Raskin also requested that the Swiss official and FIFA provide all materials regarding his contacts with Trump, the Trump administration, or members of the US president's family holding companies, by August 9, 2026, including messages he sent on various social media platforms.

Similarly, the House Judiciary Committee member also requested that the Swiss national submit a list of all gifts, awards, honors, or payments that FIFA had sent to Trump or his relatives.

Finally, Jamie Raskin also wants all records of his visits to FIFA's Miami and New York offices during the organization of the 2026 World Cup. He stated in his letter that this letter is tantamount to formal notification, and therefore Infantino must not attempt to destroy these materials in case of any future legal proceedings.

A spokesperson for the Trump campaign told The Athletic, "Jamie Raskin is a little guy who thinks he's smart but is actually stupid." He added, "No other president in history has been able to accomplish what President Trump has accomplished for the American people and the world."

The spokesperson went on to say: “With bold vision and unwavering leadership, the 2026 FIFA World Cup generated billions of dollars in revenue, significantly boosted the host city’s economy, and provided a safe and seamless experience for millions of fans and athletes from around the world. It will undoubtedly go down in history as one of the greatest and most successful sporting events ever.”
