According to L'Equipe, 83-year-old former Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Pereira has been discharged from the intensive care unit after nearly a month in the hospital.
Pereira had been in the intensive care unit since June 28th due to lung inflammation. According to the Rio de Janeiro hospital that treated him, he has been discharged after his condition improved. The hospital stated that the 83-year-old coach's "clinical condition has improved," and he is "conscious, actively cooperating with treatment, and his kidney function has stabilized." He has now been transferred to the semi-intensive care unit.
Pereira has been diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma (a type of lymphoma) since 2023. In late June, his condition worsened, and he underwent surgery and is now on life support with artificial respiration.
Pereira holds the record for most World Cup appearances as a head coach: in addition to coaching the Brazilian national team twice, in 1994 and 2006, he also coached the national teams of Kuwait (1982), the United Arab Emirates (1990), Saudi Arabia (1998) and South Africa (2010).
